One of the greatest actors of our time, Daniel Day-Lewis, stepped away from acting 7 years ago, but he recently announced that he’s coming back to the screen to star in a new movie that is being directed by his son. If you’re going to come out of retirement, this seems like a pretty good reason. Day-Lewis, 67, will be playing the main character in a film titled, “Aemone,” that he co-wrote with his son, Ronan Day-Lewis. The story of the movie will revolve around the relationships between fathers, sons, and brothers.
“We could not be more excited to partner with a brilliant visual artist in Ronan Day-Lewis on his first feature film alongside Daniel Day-Lewis as his creative collaborator,” Focus Features chairman Peter Kujawski went on to say about the new project. “They have written a truly exceptional script, and we look forward to bringing their shared vision to audiences alongside the team at Plan B.”
Listen, if you’ve not watched any movies starring Daniel Day-Lewis before, you are seriously missing out. He’s considered to be the finest actor in the world. And he has the accolades to prove it. The Daily Wire reports that Day-Lewis has ” received numerous accolades, including three Academy Awards, four BAFTA Awards, three Screen Actors Guild Awards, and two Golden Globe Awards. The London-born Hollywood star even received a knighthood for services to drama in 2014.”
The actor is best known for his Oscar-winning roles in “My Left Foot” (1989), “There Will Be Blood” (2007), and “Lincoln” (2012). He was also praised for “The Last of the Mohicans” (1992), “In the Name of the Father” (1993), “The Age of Innocence” (1993), “The Crucible” (1996), “The Boxer” (1997), “Gangs of New York” (2002), and “Phantom Thread” (2017). Day-Lewis also semi-retired from acting briefly from 1997 until 2000 to become a shoemaker’s apprentice in Florence, Italy. He entered back into the trade after being persuaded to appear in Martin Scorsese’s “Gangs of New York.”
In 2017, the actor’s agent announced that Day-Lewis “will no longer be working as an actor,” per BBC News.
According to the actor’s spokesperson, the decision to leave the world of acting behind was a “private decision,” though Day-Lewis did state that he was “immensely grateful to all of his collaborators and audiences.” His son, Ronan, 26, is his middle son.
When you have this level of skill in the world of make-believe, it’s pretty clear you have to be choosy about the roles you decide to invest yourself into. After all, if you are immersing yourself into the craft with such excellence, it can take a lot out of you. His taking periodic breaks from his art is a very healthy practice. Maybe others who are involved in the industry ought to take a similar path?
