In an “oops” moment that only Katy Perry could turn into a comedy goldmine, Monday’s episode of “American Idol” got a little extra unplanned exposure. During the live show, as Perry was dishing out her verdicts with co-judges Luke Bryan and Lionel Richie, her shiny, sci-fi-esque outfit decided to throw in a surprise twist.
Just as contestant Roman Collins belted out James Brown’s “It’s A Man’s Man’s Man’s World,” Perry’s metallic top showed the world it wasn’t quite up to the job, starting to unravel right there on camera. The top, a creation by designer Kate Barton, didn’t seem ready for the prime time it got thrust into, sparking a frenzy backstage to handle the peek-a-boo moment.
Katy, ever the quick thinker, cracked, “That song, uh, broke my top off!” turning what could have been a face-palm moment into a laugh fest for viewers. Off-screen, Perry got a quick assist from her style team and Bryan, who briefly played hero with a pair of scissors before thinking twice.
“I guess it is a woman’s world,” she laughed off the incident. Bryan, not missing a beat, chimed in with, “Ratings! Here we come ratings!”

The pop sensation later took to Instagram to share a behind-the-scenes video of the wardrobe rescue mission, humorously tagging it “My top broke #idol”. Perry is no stranger to wardrobe woes on the show, telling Access Hollywood, “It seems like every season, I’m either tearing the seam of my pants or… I’m just super expressive physically!”
Undeterred by the potential for fashion mishaps, Perry described her daring choice of attire as not a malfunction but “an interesting moment on live television.”

The episode rolled on, with Perry playfully concealing herself behind a pillow and then sneaking under the judge’s table in a bid to keep things modest. Despite these sporadic sartorial slip-ups, Perry’s antics have become a beloved part of the “American Idol” fabric.
Looking ahead, Perry revealed on “Jimmy Kimmel Live!” that she will bid adieu to “American Idol” after its 22nd season. Since her debut in Season 16, Perry has become synonymous with the show’s charm and appeal, but she’s now ready to hit the road and beat her own drum, hinting at new musical adventures and some well-deserved travel. This season kicked off on February 18, marking her seventh on the show.
