Anyone remember when MTV actually played music? I do! It was fantastic.
MTV launched the careers of so many bands that never would have made it in a pre-internet world. Of course, that’s not ALWAYS a good thing, did we need Milli Vanilli? However, as a cultural force that helped shape the landscape in the 80’s and 90’s MTV can’t be underestimated.
Sadly, it is a far cry from what it once was. The proliferation of low-cost, high-profit game shows, reality shows and similar programming basically squeezed the “M” out of MTV.
Personally, I haven’t watched for years. Not even the VMA’s. The Video Music Awards used to be a cultural moment when you could actually see and watch emerging artists and best-selling stars do their songs live. Now it’s just Megan Thee Stallion dressed like a prostitute spewing filth.
So much for music! Do I sound like the old man on his lawn, shaking his fist at the passing clouds? I hope so! I remember when MTV was good, and I want everyone to know it!
Speaking of old men, Johnny Depp (yes, he is older than me) is set to do a surprise appearance on this year’s VMA’s. Not to accept an award or perform, rather an unexpected role. Let’s check Page Six for the details:
Johnny Depp may be taking on a new role: Moonman.

The “Pirates of the Caribbean” star, 59, will reportedly be making a surprise appearance at the 2022 MTV Video Music Awards next weekend, according to TMZ.
The outlet reports that Depp has been in talks with the show’s production team to dress up as the network’s Moonman mascot.

So much for the surprise! Thanks, TMZ! They ruin everything, no?
The Moonman is the iconic figure MTV used to launch their network and has long been the symbol of its brand. It is also the statue the award winners take home. It used to be cool, you know, when MTV was cool.
He will also reportedly “show face” at some point during the broadcast, emceed by LL Cool J, Nicki Minaj and Jack Harlow, on Aug. 28.
Although Depp isn’t up for any awards this year, he has taken home five Moonmen statues throughout his career, including awards for Best Male Performance, Best Villain, Global Superstar and the Generation Award in 2012.
Johnny Depp might not be up for any awards this year, but he is clearly a bigger winner than anyone that will be taking home a Moonman paper weight.
Depp famously won his defamation suit against Amber Heard and subsequently has emerged from the Hollywood and the woke lefts doghouse a new man.
Hollywood and pop culture is better with Johnny Depp. Thank goodness people are realizing this, though likely too late for Disney and the Pirates franchise.
Depp’s career has gradually bounced back. As Page Six previously reported, the actor will direct a film about Italian artist Amedeo Modigliani, and produce the movie alongside Al Pacino and Barry Navidi.
Depp also inked a multi-year, seven-figure deal earlier this month to continue appearing as the celebrity face of Dior’s bestselling Sauvage cologne.
I don’t know about the movie, but the cologne smells great (it’s my go to). Johnny Depp’s career is going to smell as good as his Sauvage soon enough.
While I have no intention of watching a second of the VMA’s (most people won’t), I am still happy that Johnny Depp is making a comeback. Moonman now, big screen later, Johnny Depp keeps winning!
