On September 11th, 2021 the parents of Gabby Petito filed a missing persons report. They discovered their future son-in-law, Brian Laundrie, had driven back from to Florida in Gabby’s vehicle without her on September 1st, 2021. Several headlines immediately followed the initial report that a 22-year-old woman had gone missing while on a trip with her fiancé.
In July, Gabby Petito remained active on Instagram and the general impression was that she and Laundrie were enjoying their cross country road trip. However, Moab, Utah police encountered the couple and had a different take. It appeared that their had been an “emotional” break down of sorts between the couple and Petito admitted to slapping Laundrie during a fight. Neither were arrested, but instead allowed to continue their trip together.

Gabby’s family spoke to her throughout July and August until August 30th when they received a text that said “No service in Yosemite.” Her last facetime with her family indicated that Gabby and Brian would likely be in the Grand Tetons.
Then on September 1st, 2021 Brian Laundrie returned to North Port, Florida. He and Gabby had been living with his parents there. However, Brian returned with the modified van, but not his fiancé. He apparently had no contact with the Petito family.
When the family filed the missing person’s report on Sept 11th, the Laundrie family who had already lawyered up, had their attorney put out statement informing the police and the media, and by extension the Petito family, that they were not going to speak on Gabby’s disappearance and that they would be stepping back so that the authorities could focus on finding the missing young woman. The Petito family begged them not to step back from the investigation or the search and just tell them where Brian had left their daughter.
Brian Laundrie was officially made a person of interest on September 15, 2021.
On September 16th the family of Gabby Petito once again tried to get the Laundrie family to speak and or cooperate with authorities in helping to find their daughter. Neither Laundrie’s attorney nor the family responded to the pleas.
The very next day, September 17th, Brian Laundrie’s parents informed the police that they could not locate their son.
At the Carlton Reserve in Sarasota County, Florida, on September 18th, FBI and Police search for Brian Laundrie after a tip from his family is given. They call off the search at sunset, right around 6 pm, due to darkness and the dangers of alligators and snakes in the mostly marshy wetlands.
On September 19, 2021, Wyoming police confirm that they have found a body that bears many similarities to Gabby Petito and the family is informed of the news as well.
On September 21st, 2021, the Coroner’s office in Wyoming was able to confirm that the remains they discovered are in fact Gabby Petito. The manner of death will be listed as homicide but the final say on cause has not yet been determined and will not be until the autopsy is completed.
