The “Case Breakers” Claim To Have Identified The Zodiac Killer

Just the other day a group of specialists who investigate cold cases made the claim that they have confirmed the identity of the notorious Zodiac Killer. For those of you who don’t know who the Zodiac Killer is, he was a particularly gruesome killer that sent taunting and unsolvable puzzles and ciphers to cops and journalists from 1968-1969. Five murders in San Francisco were linked and believed to be the work of the Zodiac Killer.

Fox News states that “The Case Breakers” which is comprised of “a team of more than 40 former law enforcement investigators, journalists and military intelligence officers.” The team is responsible for investigate other high profile “mysteries such as the D.B. Cooper hijacking heist, the disappearance of former labor union boss Jimmy Hoffa and other unsolved cases.”

For anyone who doesn’t know much about the Zodiac Killer, his crimes or his riddles, The History Channel website put a time line together back in 2017.

The gist is that in July 1969 “a letter arrived at The San Francisco Examiner newspaper” with a coded message that included “I like killing people because it’s so much fun.” This would begin a correspondence between the killer and police, as well as publications, that would last until 1974 through post cards and letters signed as several different identities such as “The Zodiac”, “Friend”, “Citizen”, or “the Red Phantom”.

Most of the victims were shot to death and through the timeline provided in the link above, the Zodiac took responsibility for approximately 37 victims, though only five murders were ever linked or believed to have been committed by the man.

Through the decades there have been several people who told various cops, journalists, cellmates, friends or family that they were the killer, but for the most part nothing was ever proven or corroborated. Now, in 2021 The Case Breakers believe that they have at last identified the man who was responsible for the five confirmed murders by linking the Zodiac to a sixth murder.

So who is the infamous killer that shot and stabbed people for the “fun” of it? According to the Case Breakers it’s Gary Francis Poste, a man who not only has scars that match the first sketches made after speaking to survivors of the The Zodiac’s brutality, but a man who also was in the same vicinity as the sixth victim in 1966; Cheri Jo Bate who was only 18-years old. (Note: the second drawing with less lines on his forehead was considered by survivors to be the more accurate)

Oddly enough, another investigator is claiming that he too had pegged Poste as the Zodiac killer roughly five years ago when the man was still alive. Of course his evidence, just like the Case Breaker’s, is circumstantial at best and neither the FBI nor the police departments associated with the cases commented then just as they haven’t commented this year. The reason? It’s still an ongoing investigation. Plus, there’s a few holes in the theory.

Although the Case Breakers have been involved in these high profile cases, nothing official or confirmed has ever come out of their group. Also, no one has been officially declared a suspect for the Zodiac killer by the authorities. As a matter of fact, there has only been one person of interest named and that was Arthur Leigh Allen and neither his DNA nor his hand writing ever matched with what little evidence was gathered from the killings or from the dozens of search warrants issued for Leigh over the years.

So was the case cracked, or is this just a publicity stunt of some kind? At the moment and based on the fact that so far all requests to compare Poste’s DNA with what is on record for the Zodiac has been denied, we’re obliged to assume it was the latter.
