In a dramatic revelation, Fox News anchor Bret Baier’s teenage son, Paul Baier, has faced down his fifth open-heart surgery. The 16-year-old’s latest medical ordeal unfolded in Palm Beach, Florida, where the Baier family often retreats from their primary residence in Washington, D.C. This heart-wrenching saga began with what seemed to be a simple cold.
Amy Baier, Paul’s mother, quickly sensed the need for a professional evaluation given Paul’s precarious health history, including five congenital heart defects. Initially, their local physician dismissed the symptoms as the common rhinovirus. However, due to Paul’s complex medical background, he was promptly sent for a chest X-ray.
The Baier family was soon thrown into a whirlwind of medical assessments. “Dr. Stein, was very thorough and before we left, she said, ‘Let’s do a chest X-ray, just to be sure everything’s okay,'” Amy recounted. The X-ray hinted at possible complications, showing unusual tissue on Paul’s lungs, which led them straight back to their cardiologist in D.C. An MRI there unveiled a shocking discovery — an aneurysm the size of a golf ball perilously close to his heart.

Bret Baier shared the nerve-racking moment the doctors broke the news. “The MRI comes back, and they sit me down and say, ‘This is a really big deal. This is an aneurysm the size of a golf ball that has formed off of his heart,'” Bret disclosed. The stakes were high, with risks of the aneurysm bursting at any moment, leading to immediate life-threatening complications.

Reflecting on the gravity of the situation, Bret captured the emotional weight as his son was wheeled into surgery. “As he rolled away on the gurney, it was pretty tough. Very emotional,” Bret shared. The surgery was grueling, lasting nearly 10 hours, but ultimately successful.
In a touching exchange with PEOPLE, Paul expressed his resilient spirit. “I’m so grateful to have the community I have, and to have my life. A lot can change in a matter of five hours,” he said. Just five days post-surgery, Paul was ready to be discharged, signaling a promising road to recovery. Bret commemorated their departure from the hospital with a heartfelt snapshot, capturing a moment of relief and hope.
